Ingenuity and Beauty - astrolabe study day
Originally scheduled for 9 November 2024, this Study Day will now be held on Saturday, 8 February 2025.
Ingenuity and Beauty: astrolabe study day
The Centre has staged the exhibition “Lines of Faith: Astronomy and the Art of the Astrolabe in the Islamic World”. It features historic objects from Oxford's History of Science Museum, from the 10th to 17th centuries. Together with illuminating interactives, the display combines science, art, craft and religion.
This study day provides a hands-on accompaniment to the exhibition. Join Dr Taha Yasin Arslan, exhibition curator Dr Stephen Johnston and Museum Director Dr Silke Ackermann for an afternoon of the astrolabe: an introduction; a guided visit to the display; a sequence of workshop activities on brass astrolabes; and lessons in actually using the instrument.
Attendance is ticketed and booking is required. Click here for more details and to book.
