Max Gallien is a political scientist specialising in the politics of informal and illegal economies, the political economy of development, and North African politics. He is a research fellow at the Institute for Development Studies and the International Centre for Tax and Development where he co-leads the research area on taxation and informality. He is the author of “Smugglers and States: Negotiating the Maghreb at Its Margins” (2024) and the co-editor of the “Routledge Handbook of Smuggling” (2022).
