The Political Economy of the Private Sector in the Middle East
The Centre hosted a two-day international conference in Oxford on the political economy of the private sector in the Middle East on 5-6 June 2015. Jointly organised with the Cairo-based Economic Research Forum (ERF), the conference attracted leading scholars in the field from the Middle East, Europe and United States. Several Oxford scholars and students were also in attendance. Separate conference sessions were held on various aspects of business–state relationship in the region, covering such diverse themes as banking, trade policies, exports, and performance of state-owned enterprises. Papers were also presented on crony capitalist structures in individual North African countries. The key note address was delivered by Professor Lant Pritchett of Harvard University.
